The Best Books to Enhance Your Spiritual Journey (In My Opinion)

Rewind to 5 years ago, I was a self proclaimed “Non-reader”. I somehow found time to watch the whole series of American Horror Story but also what mum has time for reading? It wasn’t until I would embark on a deep and profound spiritual journey that I found myself hungry for more knowledge and was able to read a book a week. That’s 12 books a year for anyone counting at home.

Below are some of the MOST thought provoking reads I feel anyone on a journey to self discovery, healing wounds and connecting with self should read.

Chakra Healing: A Beginner’s Guide to Self-Healing Techniques that Balance the Chakras
By Margarita Alcantara

For a reason I can only call “intuition” I purchased this book as the first book when I started my journey. I kept hearing about chakras and how out of alignment mine were (from healers and intuitives) but was unsure what that meant and how to fix them. I wasn’t sure if it was my physical body, emotional body or all of the above that needed healing. This book answered all my questions and more.

After comprehensively explaining what each chakra point represents; this guide is so well written and easy to follow. It includes simple life tools to heal each chakra point from diet to daily rituals. It also felt the least “woo woo” of any of the books I had found and so appealed to my then less “woo woo” self. Now I am reading a book about how to access alien guides, so you can see how far I have come since then.

The Wisdom of the Shamans
by Don Miguel Ruiz

Wew! If you want a book about primal spiritual journeys and how we are one with nature this is it. “For generation after generation, Toltec shamans have passed down their wisdom through teaching stories. The purpose of these stories is to implant a seed of knowledge in the mind of the listener, where it can ultimately sprout and blossom into a new and better way of life."

In The Wisdom of the Shamans: What the Ancient Masters Can Teach Us about Love and Life, Toltec shaman and master storyteller Don Ruiz shares some of the most popular stories from his family’s oral tradition, and offers corresponding lessons that illustrate the larger ideas within each story.”

This book is filled with beautiful tales, so visual and captivating, they stick with you for life. I have taken many of these stories, omens, symbols and lessons with me on this journey and found this book propelled me into a state of understanding my connection to all living things.

The Choice
by Dr. Edith Eva Edgar

This book quite frankly changed my life. Dr. Edgar starts by recapping her life in Germany and the horrors that would soon unfold as she and her family are unknowingly escorted to Auschwitz. I have goosebumps even recapping the story, as she goes into harrowing details of her experience. However, don’t be turned off by thinking this is a book about war. Dr. Edgar is a world renowned clinical Psychiatrist. She manages to turn this incredibly horrible life story into one of hope, human survival and profound life lessons. She is able to transcend her fear, her experiences and essentially the trauma stored in her body in the most beautiful way. She finishes the book by showing the reader that they too can come full circle with their trauma. She shares many real life stories from her clients that exemplify how she uses her trauma to help heal others. It’s SO moving and so incredible, truly.

If you were going to choose one book from the list it would be this one.

“Dr. Eger’s life reveals our capacity to transcend even the greatest of horrors and to use that suffering for the benefit of others. She has found true freedom and forgiveness and shows us how we can as well.” —Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself
by Michael A. Singer

I love everything Michael Singer has to say, I have read this and all of his other books. He has a way of viewing the world that is so profoundly honest and simple that at first I actually found it quite triggering. “How can it be this simple?” I thought. Once I started practicing his lessons and teachings in real life I realised, he was right! The reason I found it so triggering was because my brain was complicating everything in front of me, keeping me stuck in the loops of negative stories. If you’re wanting to read something that explains how simple it is to live a life unbothered by the external world, then this is the book!

If you’re unsure I recommend you listen to one of his weekly talks. I listen to these frequently and just love his tone of voice and underlying message. Listen to them here.

by Glennon Doyle

😮‍💨 This book is a MUST READ. Glennon Doyle takes you on the journey of her awakening to find herself, which means letting go of the identity that shaped her life as a mother, wife and daughter. Her words are so well written you feel intimately able to feel her in every stage of this incredibly brave journey.

This is a journey if travelling inward to live a life that feels authentically you through the woven tales of Doyle’s everyday life. By reading her stories the reader is able to see how being brave and taking chances, taking time to understand your intuition and trust it and most of all letting go of judgments are the key to an abundantly, beautiful and aligned life.
